How Generosity Improves our Health
“Generosity consists not of the sum given but the manner in which it is bestowed”
Mahatma Gandhi
Generosity, is such a beautiful word and when put into practice it can have such a profound and positive effect on our health. The evidence is clear that the simple act of giving can activate regions of the brain associated with pleasure, social connection and trust, which can make us happier and even extend our life. I hope that after reading this edition of The Path you are motivated to reach out in some way to a significant other, friend or colleague. The impact could be life changing. Here is a beautiful story, close to my heart of courage, love and loads of generosity.
Twelve months ago Jaye Hoelscher, our beloved Head of Guest Experience and her partner Anthony welcomed their little son Ashton into the world. Three days later he lost his battle to live due to a rare lung condition. It has been an incredibly difficult 12 months. The unwavering support and generosity of family, friends, colleagues and even strangers has gone a long way in the healing process. So too has a fundraising campaign called Beards of Hope. Throughout winter, Anthony and 25 of his bearded mates embarked on this initiative to recognise and support bereaved dads as well as their families who are navigating the loss of a child and the heartbreak that comes with it. They could not have imagined that their intention to raise $5000, would eventually build to $30,000! With only days to go (31 August) their new goal is $35,000. They have been so honoured and overwhelmed by the generosity of others, that they are now extremely proud to give back to an organisation that supports them and others through their grief.
